The Queen's Palace, Tananarive, Madagascar, 1897. After conquering Madagascar in the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896, France annexed the island. Queen Ranavalona III, the last ruler of the Merina dynasty that had ruled Madagascar for the previuos 103 years, was sent into exile in Algeria.
