Description
Exterior view of Avery Auditorium in the mid 1930s, which was one of the original wooden structures on the early National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, Incorporated for the Colored Race, now North Carolina Central University. The structure was built in 1910 by noted African American architect William Sidney Pittman. Named in honor of a donation of a $1,000 contribution to the university by Sarah P. Avery, the building was located on the site of the present James S. Lee Biology Building. Architect William Henry Pittman (1875-1958) was the son-in-law of of educator Booker T.
