Description
(Original Caption) Mandan earth hut of early days built by Indians at celebration...Mandan Indians recently gave a demonstration of hut building at the Fort Union celebration re-dedicating the famous old fur trading post on the upper Missouri River, in Montana. The photo shows the process of winter hut building of these Indians. Setting up a framework of poles, they heaped brush on it, and covered this over with dirt and sod. The sentinel would sit on top to warn the occupants of the approach of a hostile tribe. Within the Indians would huddle with their ponies tied in one corner. The warmth from the animals' bodies kept the temperature of the hut at about 65 degrees.
