Artist's Description
(Original Caption) 1/16/1932-Los Angeles, CA- Portrait of Mrs. Thelma Ron demonstrating the "mechanical secretary," a machine invented by E.R. Degenhart to handle telephone calls for the business and professional man after his office is closed. When the telephone rings, the bell pulls a switch mechanism connecting the telephone line to a reproducing apparatus, which plays a greeting and records the message of the client. When the caller hangs up, the telephone disconnects the apparatus.
