Description
(Original Caption) And this conquered the air back in 1908. In the declining years of their life, William H. Martin, and his wife, Almina of Canton, Ohio, may be recognized for two distinctive accomplishments, martin built a monoplane in 1908, which will soon be exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. His contribution to aviation is in the balancing planes or struts as those seen on the present monoplanes of Col. Lindbergh and Charles present monoplanes of Col. Lindbergh and Charles Levine. Mrs. Martin's fame lies in probably being the first woman to fly, for she went up in her husband's machine in January 1909. Photo shows Martin seated in the original plane which he has rebuilt before sending to Smithsonian Institute.
