(Original Caption) Chicago: Cradle of Western Electric, this Chicago building housed the shops and offices of Gray and Barton, electrical manufacturers in the early 1870s. In 1872, the sign shown here was replaced by another reading "Western Electric Manufacturing Company." Nine years later, when the company was taken over by the American Bell Telephone Company, the name was streamlined to read Western Electric Company.
