On descent into Jakarta airport, Indonesia, one can see an incredible watery landscape along the north coast of West Java province. During the height of the rainy season the entire coastal plain floods, inundating rice paddies during this seasonal growth cycle. The shallow ocean and coastal flats are converted to shrimp farm ponds making the actual coastline barely distinguishable. River channels are straightened as part of the intensive irrigation system to support rice farming. The small river eventually discharges into the Java Sea, mixing plumes of sediment-laden floodwaters with seawater.
