The city of Granada, capital of the province of the same name, lies beneath the Sierra Nevada in south-east Spain. Former palace of the Muslim rulers of Granada, the Alhambra is widely accepted to be the finest example of Islamic architecture in Europe. The Alhambra and Generalife were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
