(Original Caption) Colored youths named to Annapolis and West Point...For the first time in more than fifty years, two Negroes are to be admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, and, to break a lapse of forty years, one Negro will go the military academy at West Point. The three colored men, all eighteen years of age, were nominated in Washington by Congressman Oscar De Priest, Negro representative of the First Illinois District. Photo shows Laurence A. Whitfield, midshipman candidate pictured in the Zoological Laboratory at the University of Chicago where he is a student.
