Description
Under the Falls, Canada Side', 1872. The Niagara Falls seen from a cave underneath. '...over the ledge of limestone at this point the accumulated waters of four vast inland seas hurl themselves madly on their way to the ocean...during the last half-mile before the wild descent, there is a decline so great as to produce the most superb rapids. The territory that these lakes drain is equal to that of the entire Continent of Europe, many of the streams that feed Lake Superior being fully two thousand miles away'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American . Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]. Artist Frederick William Quartley. (Photo by The Print Collector/Heritage Images via Getty Images)
