Artist's Description

The Observatory at Greenwich, 1836. Flamsteed House, the Royal Greenwich Observatory, was built by Christopher Wren (1632-1723) on the orders of Charles II with the aim of providing accurate navigation tables and of solving the problem of finding longitude at sea. The building is named after John Flamsteed (1646-1719), the first Astronomer Royal. (Photo by The Print Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
