Artist's Description
The Manor House at Chelsea, built by Henry VIII, circa 1810 (1911). King Henry VIII (1491-1547) moved to Chelsea in 1510. He began building his New Manor House, also known as Chelsea Palace in the 1540s, intending the building as a wedding present for Catherine Parr (1512-1548). King Henry VIII?s Manor House stood here until 1755 when it was demolished after the death of its last occupant, Sir Hans Sloane. Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) was an Irish-born British physician, naturalist and collector, notable for bequeathing his collection to the nation, providing the foundation of the British Museum. Numbers 19 to 26 Cheyne Walk were built on its site in 1759-1765. From London - North of the Thames, by Sir Walter Besant. [Adam & Charles Black, London, 1911]. Artist: Unknown.
