Artist's Description
'The Ladies' Advocate', 1867. This cartoon shows Mrs Bull commiserating with John Stuart Mill on the rejection of his motion, during the course of the debates on the Reform Bill, to change all references to 'Man' in the Bill to 'Person'. Mill's most famous work was The Subjection of Women. His views on the need to allow women the vote were well-known and he was a passionate advocate of extending the franchise to include the 'gentler' sex.
