Artist's Description

'The Finish', 1886. This is a companion cartoon to 'The Start', published on 3rd July 1886. Lord Salisbury, the Leader in the Lords of the Conservative Party, comes through the tape a good head in front of the Liberal Prime Minister, Gladstone. This relates to the General Election recently called after Gladstone had been defeated on the second reading of his Irish Home Rule Bill. The country now had its third administration during the course of 1886. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 17, 1886. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
