Description
The Cadogan Lamp, circa 1507-1510, (1881). Etching of a bronze oil lamp made in the early 16th century in Padua, Italy, by Andrea Riccio, and acquired at the Cadogan sale in 1865. The lamp is in the form of an ancient galley or fantastical ship, with a statuette of a cupid riding a dolphin in the cover. On the side is a youth blowing a horn into a billowing sail, representing the motto 'make haste slowly'. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum).
