Description
Teocalli Mountain', 1874. View of a peak in the Elk Mountains, part of the Rocky Mountain range, Colorado, USA. 'We pitch our tents near the base of an immense pyramid, capped with layers of red sandstone, which we name Teocalli, from the Aztec word, meaning "pyramid of sacrifice". The view from our camp is - we should say surpassing, could we remember or decide which of all the beauties we have is the grandest. Two hills incline toward the valley where we are stationed, ultimately falling into each other's arms. Between their shoulders there is a broad gap, and, in the rear, the majestic form of the Teocalli reaches to heaven'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American . Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]. Artist J. G. Smithwick. (Photo by The Print Collector/Heritage Images via Getty Images)
