(Original Caption) 4/6/1867-New York: Cover illustration from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" depicting the St. Patrick's Day Riot. The riot commenced on Grand street when a truckman, trying to cross the street, became hemmed in by the procession. He was then attacked by the Irish Broome Society and beated unmercifully. Policemen trying to render assistance were also attacked--20 policemen were disabled.
