Description
Siege of Chartres, French Religious Wars, 1568 (1570). Sappers working to undermine a bastion forming part of the city's defences. The Huguenots commanded by the Prince de Conde besieged Chartres at the end of February 1568, breaching the north wall with artillery. An assault launched on 7 March to capture the city was unsuccessful. The siege was lifted on the signature of the Peace of Longjumeau on 23 March. The French Religious Wars between the Catholics and the Protestant Huguenots took place between 1562 and 1598. The conflict ended when Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting Protestants and Catholics equal rights. (Photo by Ann Ronan Pictures/Print Collector/Getty Images)
