(Original Caption) This is a square in Marash, Cilicia with primitive ox-cart and oxen with owner who gives his buffalo a much needed rest after a journey from the nearby hills. Marash is the scene of one of the most ruthless massacres yet perpetrated by the Turks. During their engagement with French troops occupying the Town, 5,000 Armenians, many of them women and children, where shot down or butchered. Armenians with the Near East Relief could not look on as witnesses. One of the Relief buildings was sacked and Armenian refugees were found therein slain.
