Description
Samuel Wilberforce, English churchman, 1870. Wilberforce (1805-1873) at the time of his appointment as Bishop of Winchester in 1869. The son of William Wilberforce (1759-1833), philanthropist and campaigner for the abolition of slavery, he was a strong oppononent of Darwin's theory of natural selection. His well-known charm earned him the nickname 'Soapy Sam'. From The Graphic (London, 4 June 1870). (Photo by Oxford Science Archive/Print Collector/Getty Images)
