(Original Caption) Samuel F.B.Morse, inventor of the first practical telegraph, is shown sending the first public telegram on May 24, 1844. The message, "What hath God wrought!" was sent from the Supreme Court Chamber in the Capitol at Washington over a 40-mile wire to Baltimore, Md.
