Description
This shot is taken from Two Rivers Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park highlighting Notchtop Mountain. It was an extremely windy morning on this day and we were getting pelted with blowing snow and were knocked around on the ice. (the things we go through for a shot!) In fact, the wind was so strong it would blow us across the ice if we weren't lying atop one of these snow features. The sun was hidden most of the early morning behind clouds which made for a great sunrise shot, but removed a lot of detail from the mountain. Eventually, the blowing snow and wind proved to be too much, so we took shelter in the grove of trees on the left of the shot to wait it out. We tried several times to get this shot as the sun would peak through the clouds, but kept missing it until we'd had enough and packed up to leave. One last look around on our way out and there it was, so we unpacked and shot it.I'm guessing these are footprints as that's all I can fathom based on their pattern in the ice. Made up of windswept snow, they stand about 1' tall and were fairly solid. My best guess is that a hiker walked across the ice when it was just a bit soft on the surface and the indents left behind began to catch and hold snow which eventually built up to from these.
