Description
Quail chicks - the Gambel's Quail Callipepla gambelii - separated from the covey and looking for the mother. The Gambel's Quail is a small Southwestern ground-dwelling bird named after a 19th century naturalist. They rarely take flight, preferring to scurry among plants and brush. When they do fly they take off in sudden bursts, fly a short distance, then glide to the ground. Chicks are predominantly insectivorous, but adults consume more plant matter. Yavapai County, Arizona, 2012.
