Artist's Description

Princess Elizabeth brought as a prisoner to the Tower of London, 1554 (1840). After Sir Thomas Wyatt's failed uprising against Queen Mary, her half-sister Elizabeth came under suspicion of plotting against her and desiring a return to Protestantism in England. The suspicions were encouraged by Mary's close confidant, Simon Renard, the Ambassador of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
