Description
(Original Caption) Commander Richard E. Byrd, with his pilot, Floyd Bennett, returned to Kings Bay, May 9th, after cinching America's claim to the North Pole, after a 15-hour, 51-minute flight, in which Peary's observations were confirmed. The flight was favored by sunlight, and the absence of fog, and the sun compass functioned perfectly. A leak in the plane's oil system developed near the pole, but Byrd insisted on going on, despite the fact that his nose and fingers were frozen in zero temperature. This photo shows Floyd Bennett, the pilot, on this successful trip to the Pole.
