(Original Caption) Predicting that commercial planes will travel at speeds up to 500 miles an hour in the near future, professor Auguste Piccard, famous Belgian scientist who twice penetrated the stratosphere, is seen here aboard the S.S. Champlain on his arrival in New York, June 21st. Piccard en route to Chicago to act as advisor in the proposed stratosphere flight of his brother Jean, said that companies are building air tight steel cabin planes, on the strength of his findings ten miles above the earth., According to the scientist, the air in the stratosphere is lighter , and atmosphere better, allowing the airplanes to travel with speed.
