Description
'Ph-pps The Fortunate', 1858. '(As he Appeared when made a Knight of the Shower Bath.)' Phipps, Prince Albert's private secretary, kneels down whilst holding a pair of boots. He is knighted by Prince Albert, who is dressed in a bathrobe and holding a brush as a replacement for a sword. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 6, 1858.Prince Albert, clad in his dressing-gown, 'knights' his faithful valet, Mr Phipps, with his long handled bath brush. The scene is set in the bathroom which accords with the valet just having been awarded Knight Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath for his distinguished services to His Royal Highness.
