Artist's Description
Pewter container, circa 1300, (1881). Etching of a pyx (container for storing consecrated bread used in the catholic mass) or salt cellar, made in England in the early 14th century. The box is hexagonal in shape and stands on three feet. The hinged lid is decorated in relief with the Annunciation, and the arms of France and England as used before 1340. There is a religious inscription in Latin round the edge of the upper section, and the finial is in the form of a seated hound. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]. Artist M Sullivan. (Photo by The Print Collector via Getty Images)
