Artist's Description
Palace of Sans Souci, Milot, Haiti, 1873. Built by freed slaves between 1810 and 1813, the Palace of Sans Souci was the residence of King Henri I (Henri Christophe) of Haiti. After the former French colony declared its independence in 1804, the northern half of Haiti was a monarchy while the southern part was a republic. The two halves of the country were united as a republic after Henri Christophe committed suicide in 1820. The palace was destroyed in an earthquake in 1842 and was never rebuilt.
