(Original Caption) The World's First Mountain Climbing Locomotive at Work. Boston, Massachusetts: "Old Peppersass" the world's first mountain climbing locomotive. Shown beginning trestle work at Jacob's Ladder of Mount Washington in 1888. The locomotive was used in building tracks up the mountain for climbing later. In exercises this coming July 20th, "Old Peppersass" the father of all mountain climbing locomotives of New England, will be placed on permanent display at Bretton Woods, N.H. after making final climb of the mountain.
