Portrait of William F. Burghardt and John B. McLendon who were both early athletic pioneers at NCCU. "Big Coach" Burghardt joined North Carolina College in 1937 and left in 1942, as a stellar football coach and mentor to student athletes. John B. McClendon joined North Carolina College from 1937 to 1952, as served as head basketball coach from 1941 to 1952, where he pioneered basketball's full court game, and inovated such strategies as full court press, the rotating pivot and the "four corners" among his strategies. Coach McLendon won tournament or visitation championships for the Eagles in 1941, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1950 and 1951. He later served as the first black coach in a professional league with the Cleveland Pipers in the American League and the first black coach at a predominantly white university at Cleveland State University.
