(Original Caption) 1956-Three white men assaulted African American musician Nat "King" Cole April 10th, as the entertainer performed at the City Auditorium in Birmingham, AL, police reported. Cole was playing before a predominantly African American audience with the white spectators segregated in balcony seats. Police said that one officer was smashed in the face with a bottle as he tried to break up the melee. No further details were immediately available.
