Artist's Description

(Original Caption) Hudson River Valley icemen reap their harvest as cold wave continues...Because of the continued cold weather, dealers who harvest the natural ice are now rushing to gather in their crops of the frigid commodity, demanded throughout the year by housewives. Wallace Pond, about three miles outside of Peekskill, has frozen over to a depth of a foot or more. Nearly three score of ice harvesters are at work cutting and storing the ice which is cut in cakes weighing approximately two hundred pounds each by a gasoline motor-driven saw. After the ice is nearly cut through by the motor-saw the men use hand saws and wedges to finish the job. The cakes of ice are floated to a chute, pushed on and when caught by the spikes on the chain-belt conveyor continue on into the ice house where they are packed.
