UNITED STATES - FEBRUARY 04: Mayor David N. Dinkins embraces a young boy near abandoned buildings in the South Bronx. Born July 10, 1927, in Trenton, N.J., he attended Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He was elected to the New York state assembly in 1965, served as city clerk from 1975-1985, and as Manhattan borough president from 1986-1989. Popular for his policy of racial harmony, he defeated incumbent Mayor Ed Koch in the 1989 Democratic mayoral primary. He then beat Rudolph Giuliani in the general election to become the first African-American mayor of New York City. In 1993, he lost his bid for re-election to Giuliani.
