I read an article in People Magazine (June 5) about Mary Tyler Moore. It mentions a clip from the HBO documentary "Being Mary Tyler Moore." Her husband, cardiologist Robert Lavigne said, "You think you know and love her--but you don't know everything." An excerpt from People: "He admits he didn't remember one of the documentary's most touching clips: It's from Moore's bridal shower, not long before their 1983 wedding. She's telling her friends (among them Betty White) how one night she woke up and told Levine she was hungry, and he went to the kitchen to bring her back a tuna sandwich: "It was the most loving thing that anybody had ever done for me ever before in my life," Moore says thoughtfully. "I've been given jewels. I've been given a lot of things that we all think are obviously of value." They were meaningless compared to "that tuna fish sandwich that was for nothing, from someone who gave it only to me." I guess I should learn to be more grateful and follow Mary's example. Towards the end of the article, "The couple founded the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative to prevent diabetic retinal disease, which can lead to blindness--but nothing could stop or reverse the damage already done to Moore's eyes. "She tried to hide that for as long as she could," says Levine. "But at the end, she was unable to even walk across the room safely."
