Artist's Description

Mandore, 1640, (1881). Etching of a mandore, an early version of the mandolin, in carved pearwood, ebony veneer and ivory. It was made by Boissart in France and is dated 1640. It has six strings, and the back of the body is decorated with the Judgement of Paris, the mythical beauty contest between the goddesses Juno, Minerva and Venus. From "The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum).
