(Original Caption) 6/5/1917-Edward F. Hinkel of the Lafayette Escadirille, standing in front of his airplane, which was the first to carry the American flag over the French lines.The picture was made in April this year at Ham, near St. Quentin.Below the stars and stripes is the flag of the Escadrille, which bears an Indian head in red, white and blue and yellow.The emblem was designed by Hinkel.This daring American aviator was recently lost overnight behind the German lines, but returned safely.
