Artist's Description

"Lo!" he exclaimed, "lo Dis!: and lo! the place, where thou hast need to arm thy heart with strength"', circa 1890. Satan, referred to by Virgil as Dis, is trapped in the frozen central zone in the final Ninth Circle of Hell. He is being punished for committing the ultimate sin of personal treachery against God. Illustration from "The Vision of Hell" (Inferno), the first part of "The Divine Comedy" (La divina commedia) by Dante Alighieri. This long, narrative poem, written in Italian circa 1308-1321, tracing Dante's imaginary journey from Hell, through Purgatory and finally to Heaven and a beatific vision of God, has been published numerous times. This edition, published late 19th century, is illustrated by Gustave Dore. [Cassell Petter & Galpin, circa 1890]. Artist Gustave Doré. (Photo by The Print Collector/Getty Images)
