(Original Caption) 11/15/1943- The goal that musicians dream of, was reached by Leonard Bernstein at the musically tender age of 25. In a last minute emergency he conducted the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He took the podium in the emergency created by the illness of Bruno Walter who was to have conducted during the during the absence of Dr. Arthur Rodzinski. Bernstein had been appointed assistant conductor at the beginning of the current season. He was born in Melrose, MA, graduated from Harvard and first attracted nationwide attention when he conducted at the Berkshire Festivial.
