Artist's Description

(Original Caption) 7/21/1919-Santa Barbara, CA- The largest passenger-carrying plane ever built is ready for service at Santa Barbara, California. The designing and building of the plane began in November of 1916. The builders, two brothers, Allan H. and Malcolm Loughead, experimented with and perfected during the three years since that time. The commander of the Naval Training Station at North Island, California, says that the new seaplane is easier to handle and control than the smallest of the Naval scout planes. Photo shows the machine ready to take off in the water on a passenger-carrying flight.
