Artist's Description

In the 37 years that James H. Williams, Chief Attendant, has worked at Grand Central, he has seen it grow from the remodeled "depot" of 1900, to the present-day "Gateway to a Continent," encompassing 48 acres. Mr. Williams heads the corps of 495 porters who handle 85,000 pieces of baggage each month. With his whistle Mr. Williams directs his men to points where they are needed as trains come and go.
