Artist's Description
This photograph illustrates one of the most remarkable street festivals associated with the Hindu religion, in which enthusiastic worshippers acquire merit and escape the consequences of wrong doing by dragging along a huge car containing a venerated image. The procession shown here took place in Kumbakenam, one of the sacred towns of Southern India. The great structure seen in the center of the picture is known as the Chitrai Carcar of the Sri Saranapani Swami Temple, and it is shown just moving from its position at eight o'clock in the morning, drawn by a concourse of devotees who numbered about six thousand. The car reached its destination, a mile away at 10:30 the following morning. | Location: Kumbakenam, India.
