Description
(Original Caption) 9/27/1946-All Hallows on the Sea, England-Geoffrey de Havilland, daredevil test pilot and scion of a famous British aviation family, was presumed killed Sept. 27th in the explosion, 10,000 feet in the air, of a radical, new, tailless jet plane that he had hoped to fly to a new world speed record. The 37-year-old flyer, who had tested every new de Havilland plane for the last nine years, was making a final test in the 3,500 horsepower, turbo jet, DH-108 Swallow. Mr. de Havilland is shown checking his watch after an earlier test flight at Hatfield, Hertfordhshire in the Swallow.
