Artist's Description

For four centuries only men have been employed in the arduous and slow work of weaving the beautiful carpets and tapestries of Gobelin. Marguerite Loger, 17-year-old girl, is the first woman to take a place before one of the looms in the famous old ‘Manufacture des Gobelins,' in Paris. The carpets and tapestries turned out are priceless. Each thread is of the most beautiful coloring and texture is knotted separately in the back. One worker cannot finish more than a square yard of such a carpet in a year. Loger was selected from many other students of design to take up the age-old study of the Gobelins. She is here shown working at her loom.
