Artist's Description
(Original Caption) May 24, 1945 - Okinawa: Life Magazine photographer Eugene Smith, while snapping a picture of a dough-boy ducking a mortar shell, was hit by a second shell which struck near him sending fragment through his right hand and into his plate and splitting his tongue. The photographer was with the 184th infantry on Okinawa when he was hit. Unable to speak because of his wound, Smith wrote on a pad, "I didn't duck but I got a good picture of the guys who did it."
