(Original Caption) World's greatest railroad tunnel nearly completed...The great Simplon Tunnel under the Alps, running from Switzerland to Italy, is nearing completion. This tremendous project was begun almost twenty years ago, but due to various causes, mainly the war, the task was never more than half completed. This tunnel, when finished, will be one of the greatest engineering feats ever attempted. For a greater part of the twelve and a half miles of the tunnel's length, the work has been done some ten thousand feet beneath the Alps. The tunnel reaches from Brieg, in Switzerland, to Iselle in Italy, and completes the shortest rail route from North Europe to the Mediterranean. Instead of a double track tunnel, two single track tunnels have been built, about sixty feet apart.
