(Original Caption) An incident in the student life of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell - An actual scene in the operating room of a medical college. The Women's Hospital and Infirmary, New York City. Circa 1847. An illustration from 'Our Famous Women: An Authorized Record of the Lives and Deeds of Distinguished American Women of Our Times' (1885). The illustration shows Blackwell at Geneva Medical College (later Hobart College) in upstate New York, as she eyes a note dropped onto her arm by a male student, which she took to contain 'a gross impertinence', during a lecture in the operating room of the medical college.
