Artist's Description
Edward Lilley, 26 (right) from Whistler, Alabama and David S. Heeschen, 28, from Homewood, IL (left) who will be awarded doctorates in radio astronomy from Harvard University. This will be the first time in history that doctorates in this science have been awarded anywhere in the world. the pair are shown standing before their dish shaped, parabolic antenna of wire mesh, which is 24 feet in diameter and cost $100,000 to build. The young scientists use this radar-like equipment instead of the more conventional telescope. (Photo by Bettmann Archive/Getty Images)
