(Original Caption) 4/18/1963-Berlin, Germany-East Berlin policemen, on the left side, repair the Berlin Wall 4/18 as West Berlin policemen and others gather on the right side. This is the section of the Wall that was damaged 4/17 when Wolfgang Engels, 19, a mechanic, rammed a Communist armored car into the structure while escaping into West Berlin. Shot during the escape, he was recovering from an emergency operation 4/18.
