A man posing with a velocipede or 'boneshaker', an early pedal bicycle, circa 1870. The bicycle features the innovation of cranks and pedals attached to the front-wheel, improving on earlier dandy horse, or draisine vehicles, which were powered by the rider pushing along the ground with the feet.
